Symbolic Wages of War - Literature Essay Samples

As children begin to age and minds start to mature, they are able to comprehend that the world can be a trying place full of crime, death, and war. The older a person gets, the more responsibilities and problems they will encounter. Some may never be involved in a physical war, but anyone can struggle with a symbolic war. In John Knowles’ A Separate Peace, Finny and Gene fight their own war, one that relates greatly to the war occurring in the outside world: the second world war. Throughout the plot, Finny and Gene manage to wage their own non-physical war, that contains just as much loss as a real one. The jealousy that Gene has for Finny shapes their relationship into a battleground, accumulating physical and symbolic casualties along the way. Gene’s hatred of Finny leads him to jounce the limb of the tree branch that Finny is perched upon. Finny, who had such a bright future ahead of him full of athletic opportunities, is stripped of his dreams when his leg is shattered after falling. Therefore, Finny is the main casualty of Gene’s war. The lives lost in a real war may be greater in number than just one, Finny, Gene feels as if his own life has been stripped away after his best friend dies. Attending Finny’s funeral, Gene says, â€Å"I did not cry then or ever about Finny. I did not cry when I stood watching him being lowered into his familys strait[laced burial ground outside of Boston. I could not escape a feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case† (186). Gene feels like he has suffered through his own death since his best friend has been taken away from him and replaced with nothing but emptiness. Their extremely close and affectionate relationship makes them support one another in a way where they complete each other. At one point, before the accident, Finny convinces Gene to come to the beach with him saying, â€Å"I hope you’re having a pretty good time here. I know I kind of dragged you away at the point of a gun, but after all, you can’t come to the shore with just anybody†¦ the proper person is your best pal, which is what you are† (40). This proves how much the two boys care about each other; Finny shows a never before seen vulnerable side while Gene sacrifices his grades to please his friend. The casualties that Gene faces are similar to lives that are lost during a war because he takes Finny’s death as his own. During the 1940s, the time period that the novel takes place in, World War II is a reoccurring issue that reappears various times. Most everyone wishes that the war will end soon to end the pain end suffering, but many sacrifices must be made along the way in order to become victorious. In physical wars, soldiers will lose their lives, and their families will grieve. Soldiers who do survive will live the rest of their lives with painful memories of the war, wishing they could go back and do something differently, saving someone’s life or sparing someone else’s. In A Separate Peace, Gene suffers losses as well, relating to the loss of life in a war. After returning to Devon, Gene does not want to accept the fact that he crippled his best friend for life, and avoids certain situations that will jolt him into reality. Gene says that he â€Å"did not want to see the trays of snails which Leper had passed the summer collecting replaced by Brinker’s files. Not yetâ₠¬  (75). Seeing how much the room changed will only prove to Gene that everything has changed, and nothing will ever be the same. He is not ready to admit his guilty feelings. This relates to veterans in real wars because they are hesitant to return home in fear of not being able to adapt back to their old lifestyle. They are afraid to embrace this new change and refuse to acknowledge the difference by telling themselves that everything is the same and that nothing at all has changed. Gene believes he is competing with his best friend, Finny, in academic and athletic abilities. Finny always is eager to convince Gene to halt his studies and break rules, like jumping off trees, instead. Gene attempts to â€Å"win† by studying more and putting in much more effort into his academics to make up for his lesser athletic ability that Finny has. Gene does technically win by killing Finny’s chances of becoming an athlete and enlisting in the war when Gene jounces the limb of a tree that Finny is perched upon, but Gene considers this victory to be a Pyrrhic one. He immediately regrets his decision to make his friend fall and shatter his leg. In a surgery to fix his leg, Finny dies when a piece of bone marrow floats through his bloodstream to his heart, leaving Gene with no more competition. Gene feels as if a part of himself died along with Finny when his â€Å"enemy† died, for taking the life of another takes something out of the killer they never can be able to regain. Soldiers feel this similar sense of remorse too when they kill another human in the battlefield; the guilt of stripping someone of their life will follow them around for the rest of their lives, become a new war they may struggle with. Another way that soldiers cope with returning home after the traumatic memories they hold, is to change their everyday routine. Gene does this when he says, â€Å"I was late for my afternoon appointment. I never used to be late. But today I was, even later than I had to be† (75). Here he is avoiding certain situations where he may feel guilty about Finny’s leg. Before the accident, Gene was one of, if not the best student at Devon, but now he is cleansing himself of all memories and routines attached to the war that he battled with Finny. Even when winning in war, the winner will have lost something of value that they will never get back. At times of war, soldiers are confused on who is to blame for their fighting. They are told that they are to fight the enemy, but it is difficult to truly know if the opposing side is evil since they are simply fighting for what they believe in. Gene’s actions of making Finny fall off the tree is what inevitably leads to Finny’s death. Some students, like Brinker Hadley, have suspicions that Gene made Finny fall. Even Brinker parallels his situation to a fallen soldier: â€Å"‘there is a war going on. Here’s one soldier our side has already lost. We’ve got to find out what happened’† (168). He and the other students desire to know who is to blame for the accident and to know who the enemy is. During this investigation, Finny himself even begins to show doubt in Gene’s innocence. Both boys are confused as to who they can trust, and who they should hate. In the last line of the novel, Gene reflect, â€Å"I killed my enemy [at scho ol] †¦ all of them, all except Phineas, constructed at infinite cost to themselves these Maginot Lines against this enemy they saw across the frontier, this enemy who never attacked that way-if he ever attacked all; if he was indeed the enemy† (196). This shows how confused Gene is about who the enemy is. At the time of Finny’s accident, Gene believed Finny was his opposer in the sense that they were competing to be superior to one another. But now it is unclear to Gene if his enemy was indeed Finny, his best pal, or himself, the envy devouring his mind. Students at Devon learn to fight their own wars, while soldiers fight in physical ones. The relationship between Finny and Gene is a microcosm of the outside world since Gene’s jealousy of his friend creates a miniature war. Their battling results in casualties, just like a real war. Gene’s inability to resolve his internal conflict of hating Finny results in not only his suffering but the suffering of others as well. This resentment that Gene feels shapes his relationship with Finny into a symbolic war that results in casualties, the same as a physical war.

Iagos evil Essay I am not what I am. What is Iago? as distinct from what he pretends to be and what are his motives?In Shakespeares, Othello, the reader is presented the classic battle between the deceitful forces of evil and the innocence of good. It are these forces of evil that ultimately lead to the breakdown of Othello, a noble venetian moor, well-known by the people of Venice as a honourable soldier and a worthy leader. Othellos breakdown results in the muder of his wife Desdemona. Desdemona is representative of the good in nature. Good can be defined as forgiving, honest, innocent and unsuspecting. The evil contained within Othello is by no means magical or mythical yet is represented by the character Iago. Iago is cunning, untrustworthy, selfish, and plotting. He uses these traits to his advantage by slowly planning his own triumph while watching the demise of others. It is this that is Iagos motivation. The ultimate defeat of good by the wrath of evil. Not only is it in his own nature of e vil that he suceeds but also in the weaknesses of the other characters. Iago uses the weaknesses of Othello, specifically jealousy and his devotion to things as they seem, to conquer his opposite in Desdemona. From the start of the play, Iagos scheming ability is shown when he convinces Roderigo to tell about Othello and Desdemondas elopement to Desdemonas father, Brabantio. Confidentally Iago continues his plot successfully, making fools of others, and himself being rewarded. Except Roderigo, no one is aware of Iagos plans. This is because Iago pretends to be an honest man loyal to his superiors. The fact that Othello himself views Iago as trustworthy and honest gives the evil within Iago a perfect unsuspecting victim for his schemes. The opportunity to get to Desdemona through Othello is one temptation that Iago cannot refuse. He creates the impression that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio in order to stir the jealousy within Othello. It is this jealousy and the ignorance of Othello that lead to the downfall of Desdemona; the one truely good natured character in the play. As the play opens we are immediately introduced to the hostility of Iago against Othello. Iago has been appointed the position of servant to Othello instead of the more prestigous position of lieutenant. Michael Cassio has been appointed this position. Iago feels betrayed because he considers him self more qualified than Cassio to serve as lieutenant. Iago then foreshadows his plans for Othello to Roderigo, O, sir, content you. / I follow him to serve my turn upon him (Act I, Scene I). Iago already realizes that Othello thinks about him as an honest man. Roderigo is used by Iago as an apprentence and someone to do his dirty work. Roderigo is naively unsuspecting. As the play shifts from Venice to Cyprus there is an interesting contrast. Venice, a respectful and honourable town is overshadowed by the war torn villages of Cyprus. It could be said that Venice represents good or specfi cally Desdemona and that Cyprus represents evil in Iago. Desdemona has been taken from her peacefullness and brought onto the grounds of evil. Iago commits his largest acts of deceit in Cyprus, fittingly considering the atmosphere. Ironically, the venetians feel the Turks are their only enemy while in fact Iago is in hindsight the one man who destroys their stable state. Act II Scene III shows Iagos willing ability to manipulate characters in the play. Iago convinces Montano to inform Othello of Cassios weakness for alchohol hoping this would rouse disatisfaction by Othello. Iago when forced to tell the truth against another character does so very suspiciously. He pretends not to offend Cassio when telling Othello of the fight Cassio was involved in, but Iago secretly wants the worst to become of Cassios situation without seeming responsible. Cassio is relieved of his duty as lieutenant. With Cassio no longer in the position of lieutenant, this gives Iago the opportunity to more eff ectively interact with and manipulate Othello. By controlling Othello, Iago would essentially To reach Desdemona directly is unforseeable for Iago considering that Othello is superior to him. It is for this reason that Iago decides to exploit Othello. If Iago can turn Othello against his own wife he will have defeated his opposition. Act III Scene III, is very important because it is the point in the play where Iago begins to establish his manipulation of Othello. Cassio feels that it is necessary to seek the help of Desdemona in order to regain his position of lieutenant and therefore meets with her to discuss this possibility. Iago and Othello enter the scene just after Cassio leaves, and Iago witfully trys to make it look like Cassio left because he does not want to be seen in the courtship of Desdemona. Cassio, my lord? No, sure, I cannot think itThat he would steal away so guilty-like,When Desdemona leaves, Iago takes the opportunity to strengthen Othellos views of honesty and trust towards him by saying ironically, Men should be what they seem; / Or those that be not, would they might seem none! (Act III, Scene III). This cleverness by Iago works upon one of the tragic flaws of Othello. Othello has a tendency to take eveything he sees and everything he is told at face value without questioning the circumstances. Iago wonders why someone would pretend to be something they are not, while in fact that is the exact thing he represents. Finally, after hearing the exploits of Iago and witnessing the events surrounding Cassio, Othello for the first time is in conflict about what is the truth. This is the first stage of Iagos scheme to control Othello.As Emilia becomes suspicious about Othellos development of jealousy, Desdemona defends her husband by blaming herself for any harm done. This suggestions put Othello into a state of such emotional turmoil that he is lost in a trance. Iagos control over Othello is so strong now that he convinces him to consider getting rid of Desdemona and even suggests methods of killing her. Iago, so proud of his accomplishments of underhandedness :My medcine works! Thus credulous fools are caught,And many worthy and chaste dames even thus,Othello in this state commits his first act of violence against Desdemona by hitting her. Therefore, I selected The Origin of Species believing that it would prove to be a stimulating and challenging reading experience. This famous book discusses in-depth many important aspects of the study of life. Darwin analyzes various issues including: creation, spontaneous generation, adaptaion, laws of organism variation, hybridism, and natural selection, all integral subjects in the science of biology. As I read this book, the magnitude of its importance became clear, and I learned a wealth of scientific information from the text that includes: geological succesion, morphology, and species variation. The convincing arguments and coherent evidence inherent in this great work induced subject retention and serious consideration of the topics that were comprehensively discussed. The theme of the nature of life (most importantly that of man) in The Origin of Species is still a subject of tremendous and continuing debate. Also, this important topic is related to a variety of current science events such as environentally concious efforts across the globe, the philosophy and science of "the survival of the fittest," and the popular studies of creation and evolution. I feel that this book is important to read because it is a publication which brilliantly discusses interesting and significant information, is often reffered to in scientific conversation and study, and defines perhaps the greatest debate of the Western World. Charles Darwin's engaging and pioneering analysis of flora and fauna calls into question the long-held and once widely accepted concepts of divine creation, spontaneous generation, and the unrelatedness of many species. Displaying original reasoning, he distinctly and defiantly challenges many ancient beliefs and makes an argument for Natural Selection: survival and evolution of species in response to environmental conditions and other circumstances through a process in which those creatures and plants with stronger, more-enduring characteristics live to produce more adaptable offspring. UST, being the oldest University in the Philippines and in the whole of Asia, has laid its foundations in the field of teaching through the centuries. The university has been giving quality education for more than four centuries, yet the university has found its way to catch up with the trend. The university was personified as old by the fact of its existence and young at heart ecause of its various ways of making the university up-to-date when it comes to the interests of the young generation. The university was able to Jive with the current generation by improving their facilities, services, curriculum, events and etc. The university is also personified as rich and honored, yet down to earth because, although being termed by various authorities as royal, pontifical, Catholic university of the Philippines, the university has kept its feet on the ground. 2. Domestic Culture University of Santo Tomas is located at Espana, Manila. It is surrounded by buildings, ostly dormitories, condominiums, apartments that aid the necessity of the students. Most of the students from University of Santo Tomas stay in a dormitory for convenience since some of them came from provinces. Inside the university, there are a lot of security guards roaming and standing, for every gate there is a security guard and for every building too. The security guard checks the ID every time students enter any college building. The whole University is enclosed with walls with Parish Church conducting masses for the public and the UST Hospital operating ithin the university. However, security guards make sure that they properly check everyone before allowing them to enter the premises of the university. 3. Public Places The Thomasians come out in public places in the university according to their purpose. For example, if a student is to go to the library or a formal event he or she must wear his or her uniform or a semi-formal attire. Food Culture University of Santo Tomas is surrounded by restaurants, eateries and places where you can eat. The restaurants around UST are known for budget meal, student meal which are very affordable and worth it. Dapitan has restaurants like Jollibee, Wendys Army Navvy, Goldilocks, Mang nasal, KFC and Lacson has Yellow Cab, Mcdonalds, Espana has Nitz, Bonchon, Pancake House and P. Passion Communities The Thomasian community is composed of people with wide range different interests. Each and every person has its own little passion. Some may like sports, some may love theatre, some may enjoy debates. There are different organizations that connect people with the same passion, these organizations help them build camaraderie and rapport with people who share the same interest. For example, UNESCO UST is an organization for students who want to be heard and has a dream to make that change, Teatro Tomasino an organization for students who share the assion of theatre arts. However, in Decision Tech this was not the case at all, as most employees were busy with their own work to focus on anyone else. Each member was focused on making sure they could get ahead instead. This was a clear situation where the organizational performance was being jeopardized. The executive team was such that people would call them the staff within the organization. The main reasons behind this were that the executive body would fight against each other, not letting the other succeed. As a result, in most meetings, it was noticed that the executive team could not come to any mutual decisions successfully. Individually, each person was brilliant in his or her job and was working perfectly fine for the organization, however, collectively, they were not being productive as a team. The team had developed a culture of its own where it was hostile and silent in most cases and the team could not perform well due to these issues in the culture of the executive team. Most elements of the norming stage were not even reached where the team would tend to ignore differences and move towards cohesiveness. Instead, the team was primarily stuck in the forming stage where the team mates were still trying to adjust to each other and were more inclined to work independently than as a team. Documents which were obtained in the course of a law suit against Union Carbide for environmental contamination before a New York Federal District Court have revealed that the Carbide that had been exported to the Indian plant was untested unproven technology. 2. The Indian subsidiary plant unlike the Union Carbide plants in the U. S. A. were not equipped to handle or cope with problems of this magnitude nor were the local authorities informed about the dangers of the chemicals that were being manufactured in Bhopal. 3. The scientist’s reports which talked and warned about such a possibility as the accident which occurred were ignored outright and the senior staff never got to view them. 4. The sales were dipping and the staff was reduced due to which the safety checks were less frequent. 5. Slip-band plates which had to be installed in order to prevent the water from the pipes entering the tanks were not installed. 6. The MIC tank refrigeration coolant was being used elsewhere, but if a button was pressed in the control room it would have activated it to use the remaining coolant. This was overlooked by the staff. 7. The gas scrubber was kept on standby, so it could not be used to clean the escaping gases with sodium hydroxide which could bring the concentration down to a safe level. 8. The water curtain also was set to ~ 13m and it did not reach the gas, it was perhaps not designed to contain a leakage of such magnitude.. 9. The audible external alarm had been activated to warn the residents of Bhopal, but this was quickly switched off in order not to cause panic among the residents. So, many kept sleeping little realizing what was happening and those who woke up thought the problem was resolved. 10. The flare towers which were used to burn off gases before escaping into the air were under repairs. 11. Doctors were not updated about the proper treatment methods for MIC gas inhalation. When they inquired they were told to give the patients cough medicines and eye drops. Union Carbide denies all this. Their theory is that one of the employees introduced water into the tank by removing a meter, â€Å" a disgruntled plant employee, apparently bent on spoiling a batch of methyl isocyanate, added water to a storage tank†(Browning). Their argument is that so much water could not have entered the tank by accident. They further accuse that the plant staff falsified the numerous records to distance themselves of the disaster and that the Government of India did not prosecute the employee as it would weaken the allegations against the Union Carbide, but the Union Carbide themselves have not named or identified the employee. Still others, like the many experts in industrial safety, believe that the tragedy was preventable, arguing that it was the due to â€Å". the negligence on the part of the Union Carbide Corporation and its corporate subsidiary Union Carbide of India Ltd. (UCIL), which had the responsibility for taking care of the day-to-day operations of the facility†(Bogard 4). Moreover, the Indian Madhya Pradesh State Government had also not done anything for the safety standards and the Union Carbide also failed to implement its safety rules. This plant had experienced six accidents between 1981 and 1984, three of them involving MIC or phosgene, but since they were small scale ones, only one worker died in 1981, the official inquiries were shelved. Probably the neglect of not getting trained workers at the plant and the laxity in the upkeep of the equipments was responsible for the leakage. Union Carbide agreed to pay US$470 million in an out of court agreement for the damages caused in the tragedy, but little of the money went to the survivors, and the people of Bhopal felt betrayed by both the Union Carbide and their own politicians. Thus on the anniversary of the tragedy they burnt the effigy of Warren Anderson who was the chairman of the Union Carbide at that time as well as the effigies of their own politicians. In July 2004, The Supreme Court of India ordered the government to pay the victims and their families the remaining $330 compensation fund. Union Carbide sold its Indian subsidiary which ran the Bhopal plant to the Eveready Battery manufacturers in 1994. The Union Carbide was purchased by the Dow Chemical Company in 2001 for $10. 3 billion. Dow Chemicals have refused to clean up the toxic waste even as activists have demanded it and are pressurizing the Government of India to demand more money from Dow. According to environmentalists the contamination may lead to slow poisoning and diseases of the liver, kidney and the nervous system. Studies have also thrown light on the fact that cancer and other illness are on the rise in this region after the tragedy. BBC Radio5 reported on 14th November 2004 that the site is still contaminated with thousands of metric tones of toxic chemicals which are held in open containers or loose on the ground. Rainfall causes run off thus polluting local wells and boreholes. Some of the areas are so polluted that anyone entering the area for more than ten minutes are likely to loose consciousness.
